The Institute for Rural Development Research (IfLS)

The Institute for Rural Development Research (IfLS) is coordinating the SEMA project. IfLS is an independent non-profit research institute at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. It was established in 1956. Since then, it has been addressing the development of agriculture and rural regions in Germany and Europe. A team of around 12 researchers and advisors supported by project assistants and administrative staff are currently managing and implementing around 20 projects. Key fields of work are sustainable development and multi-functionality of rural areas, urban-rural interrelationships, the advancement of rural, agricultural and agri-environmental policy, and the elaboration of integrated rural and regional development concepts. Clients are the European Commission, the European Environment Agency (EEA), German federal and state ministries as well as municipalities and civil society organisations. In the last 50 years the IfLS has cooperated with EU and national bodies within programs, networks and initiatives in over 450 projects.
